Romy, Because I am sort of mentally challenged and slow, I have dissected and rewritten what I think you meant to say in the middle of your post. Below is my interpretation (say so if I've got it wrong) : ...In the past high-enders came up with the t...

If you don't already know of it, here is a link to interesting German site (in English as well) with loads of info on Tube testers : http://www.jacmusic.com/Tube-testers/index.html If you scroll down to this phrase : "SHORT OVERVIEW OF TUBE TESTER FE...

Oops, that last reply of mine was intended for Romy's post (the phone rang, and Paul added his post before I got mine sent...).
When I rewired this place, I didn't know for sure that what I was doing was entirely necessary ; Paul's writing on grou...

I'm probably just paranoid, but...
You are operating in a zone where the "Theory of Natural Selection" has been rendered extinct by the "American Legal System"...
I fully agree with your take on lifting the ground, but for the above-mentioned r...

Paul,I have an L2 that uses this tube (at an alarming rate!), so I try to keep a stock of them... While sniffing around, I came upon a deal on eBay that may interest you (since you are in the US)... Check out item number: 150077022964 ...

The following reflects the current state of my understanding, and in some cases, my opinion... I welcome and very much value other points of view.Max, regarding B&W and Color : Actually we do agree here ; I did not write (nor mean to suggest) tha...

I wrote this before seeing Romy's last post with the painting, so it not a response to that post... strange coincidende that we were both thinking of painting...In the case of music we are dealing with art.
The one common denominator in art ...

You are correct, the idea is to "hard tie" the tubes together (otherwise you don't get the rigidity... think of a paintbrush where the paint has dried in the bristles... this is what you want). You would need small welds between each tube... a 1 inch...

At the risk of overloading you... Here are a couple of quick computer drawings showing a version made from 2 inch steel tube... Material cost would be very low. jd*...

Yeah, the scale of things looks more like what I would expect... In my images I used the models of horns I am building for myself... so the Fundamantals horn is not the same as yours... also, it is placed too close to the listener, but was just tryin...

Paul is correct ; you could make the vertical member from one thick hollow pole or tube and be done... this is by far the most economical route.
But since we like that curve in your latest design... (this could become a very powerful sculpture) :

|
Romy, Here are some images of a slight variant of your Macondo Frame proposal.
This version has the Fundamentals horn more rigidly coupled (this may or may not be desirable) and does not require a counter weight. It may also be a little more co...

Regarding the "complexity" of these amps :
Not being a DIY electronics guy, the Melquiades schematic makes me want to reach for a cigarette... However, naive fool that I am, having no formal training in electronics, I look at it and think to mysel...

Since I speak French, and since I deal with plagiarism everyday, and since NOTHING pisses me off more, I phoned Phil Mundi to ask him about the unothorized use of your artwork on his site, and if this act was representative of the level of fidelity o...

Angelo, We should probably start a new thread to discuss horn construction in general, as this thread is about a specific aspect of that subject (driver to horn transition). To answer your question very quickly... As previously mentioned, I will ...

Hello Angelo,
Even though it may not be a good idea to use a phase plug in a straight Upper Bass horn, I did find the information educational, and just wanted to thank you for the link. Thanks also to Romy for his comments on the subject.
The d...

Thanks for the recommendations on crossover points and the image of the rear chamber on your Upper Bass horn...
I've been back into some virtual modeling of this large horn (having made one quite nice MF horn, I've proven to myself that I have no...

Hello Romy and everyone here, Thanks again for your thoughts on the large horns. It seems best to start a new thread, as previous threads dealing with the "10-Footer" originally began as discussions of other subjects. Romy, you may want to move previ...

Romy and Dima,
Thanks for the update on the delayed Time Delay research. I sincerely hope the device performs to your expectations.
I will follow your progress with self-centered interest, because in my case, the best scenario still puts the ba...

It is looking like I will be constructing the 45Hz horn before some of the others. In considering time-alignment I went back through some of our posts and found this :
Quote from Romy : "...There is another option. Last year, or even before, when...

Romy,
Here's the link to the McCauley 6174 specs...

In considering your comments on the necessity of a 115 Hz Upper Bass horn : You make a good point...

Romy,
Sorry for taking so long to get back to you… (this being the summer time in a Latin country, I still have no internet connection at the new place).
Quote from Romy “If your lower bass channels run from 40Hz and down then the PS, size of the c...

Romy,
Thanks for your comments.
When you write "...but the major question for me, if I were in your situation, what kind topology you will be using the lower bass channel and how you will be driving it."
I assume you are suggesting that the ...

Romy,
Thanks for the updated image of the Super Melquiades.
For the past 10 days I have had to temporarily stop production of the horns and put off researching components for the amps; all this is due to my moving to a new apartment sooner than...
|
Romy,
I too was thinking the subject had evolved to the point where the thread needed splitting off.
I agree with you regarding the need to start off by constructing of a pair of “normal” Melquiades as a reference.
I don’t mind the fact that...

(Quote from your post) "... by building any serious horns you will very fast overgrow the ML2's ability to be flexible." Yes, this is in fact what I meant by "limitations imposed by of a pair of SET amps such as the ML2s". Would it be possible to ada...
|
Romy,
Thanks for the hints.
I was anticipating the limitations imposed by of a pair of SET amps such as the ML2s driving such a system (4 or 5 drivers per side, down to 40Hz), but was planning to accept those limitations for the moment... takin...

Romy,
Thanks for the super clear explanation.
The S2s should be just fine, as I barely used any volume at all...
I don't know what to make of the Vitavox specs... one set say 10 watts power handling, and the other says 100 watts...
In any...
|
As some may know from previous posts, I have been working on horns for the Vitavox S2 as well as other drivers (I am photo-documenting the process, as it is somewhat unusual, possibly to be posted here at a later date). Last night I was able to test ...
|
Romy,
As always, thanks for your thoughts.
Regarding cone movement versus rear chamber pressure : I understand that low excursion explains to a great extent, the advantages of horn-loaded designs, I just don't understand how something that "doe...
